Unidentified Rosy Slime on Remote Tasmanian Coast Prompts Fears of Possible Algal Bloom
Agencies in the island state are working to identify a rosy sludge that has appeared on a secluded beach, with certain experts anxious it could be an algal bloom.
Broad Appearance Along Shore
The pink-tinged sludge was found on a stretch of Randalls Bay about 60 kilometers south of Hobart. A comparable ooze has also been documented on parts of Little Roaring Beach and a separate bay.
Samples Gathered for Analysis
Examples have been taken and submitted to the environmental agency for examination. A spokesperson remarked that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural event in response to shifts in nutrients, heat, precipitation or light".
"They are sometimes called crimson or rosy tides because the outbreaks can color the water reddish," the representative said. "Few algal blooms are toxic, with many species functioning as a major source of food for animals in the marine food web."
"The usual source of reddish water in Tasmanian waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce luminous nighttime effects at night."

Coleman stated this organism did not produce poisons similar to the organism involved in South Australia's harmful algal bloom, but it does eat microscopic animals and "numerous fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were most at risk.
"You usually see a proliferation of the organism after a outbreak of something else, or something like a salmon or coral spawning event," she said.
Demands for Investigation and Community Health
A marine scientist, who took samples of the magenta ooze in the state, said it seemed the possible outbreak had "increased notably" and proposed the aquaculture sector was the most likely culprit, citing similar cases overseas.
"Therefore we needs to send a firm alert here, the officials and the environmental agency need to respond to this. We need to study the samples we've gathered and we need to put word out the public here," she emphasized.
Henley said she had worries for community health after experiencing a prickling feeling along her body while being exposed with tainted seawater.

An environmental foundation has stated lifeless animals and dead sea cucumbers washing ashore, with a longtime environmental campaigner describing the circumstances as an "ecological crisis" and calling on the state premier to see and "assume command the effort that authorities must be making".
